Last month, the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) released results of a study strengthening the case for utilities and other energy efficiency programs to provide incentives for exterior lighting products that satisfy the DLC’s LUNA Technical Requirements. The findings provided additional evidence that, with proper design and installation, LUNA qualified products are a win-win for exterior lighting projects. Not only do they meet independently vetted criteria for mitigating aspects of light pollution such as sky glow and light trespass, but luminaires on the LUNA Qualified Products List (QPL) also meet all the DLC’s Solid State Lighting V5.1 technical requirement thresholds for efficacy, quality, controllability and reliability of commercial LEDs – making them eligible for rebates and incentives from three-quarters of North American energy efficiency programs.

Using products on the LUNA QPL can also help facility owners and managers certify compliance with light pollution criteria specified by rating systems such as WELL, LEED, and SITES. And the LUNA QPL is a valuable tool for facility owners and managers looking to find outdoor LED lighting products that meet or perform better than the requirements in many light pollution bylaws and ordinances from cities, towns, and counties. Regarding the latter, take the quiz below to see how much you know about outdoor lighting ordinances.

See the DLC’s website for more information about outdoor lighting and resources to help local governments and other entities choose the best solutions to address light pollution.
